Building Confidence in the Gym as a New Dad in Highgate

Test post 1

Ross is a 36-year-old tech professional based in Highgate. When he joined THRIVE Personal Training & Health, he had just become a new dad and was navigating the realities of balancing work, family life, and looking after himself. He worked nearby, which meant lunchtime training sessions fitted neatly around his schedule.

Although Ross played rugby when he was younger, he’d never really spent time training in a gym environment. His main goal when he started the six-week foundation programme was simple: to feel comfortable knowing what he was doing in the gym.

At the time, he didn’t expect to stay for long.

The Challenge

Between a new baby, work demands, and it being a busy time of year, Ross wasn’t looking for anything extreme. He wanted something convenient, structured, and realistic. His priority wasn’t chasing a dramatic transformation — it was building confidence with exercises, understanding how to train properly, and fitting sessions around his life without adding stress.

Like many people who haven’t trained in a gym before, there was some uncertainty around technique, progression, and whether he’d feel out of place.

Why He Nearly Didn’t Commit Long-Term

Ross initially saw the foundation programme as a short-term option. He wasn’t sure whether structured training would stick, or whether he’d enjoy it enough to keep going. With a newborn at home and Christmas approaching, consistency and recovery were also question marks.

The Turning Point

What made the difference for Ross was the coaching. Through clear guidance, support, and structured training sessions, he quickly started to feel confident in the gym environment. He knew what he was doing, why he was doing it, and how to push himself safely.
He also genuinely enjoyed the sessions, which made turning up easier — even during a demanding phase of life.

The Results

Over his six-week foundation programme, Ross saw clear progress. Subjectively, his fitness increased by 2.5 points. Despite becoming a new dad and going through the Christmas period, his sleep quality improved by one point and his relationship with alcohol also improved by one point.

More importantly, Ross achieved the goal he cared about most: confidence. He now feels comfortable with exercises, understands how to train properly, and has seen noticeable gains in strength. He pushed himself, stayed consistent, and built momentum rather than burning himself out.

As Ross put it:

“The most helpful part for me was gaining confidence in the gym and knowing how to do exercises properly. The coaching really helped, and I’ve definitely seen gains in strength.”

Having seen the results, enjoyed the process, and benefited from the convenience of lunchtime sessions in Highgate, Ross has decided to continue training with us beyond his initial six weeks. He’s now looking forward to reassessing his goals over the Christmas period and working with us to hit them.

What This Means for You

If you’re short on time, new to gym-based training, or simply want to feel confident knowing what you’re doing, Ross’s experience shows what’s possible with the right coaching and structure.

Training doesn’t need to take over your life — it just needs to fit into it.
